The trek from Simikot, the administrative centre of Humla District, to the Tibetan border is usually used to gain access to western Tibet , where Mount Kailash is the major attraction. This is a high altitude, remote area trek that requires a special permit and the presence of a liaison officer. The trek to the border can be accomplished in as little as seven days but non-acclimatized trekkers will be well advised to take a little longer as altitudes exceeding 5000 meters will be reached.
The attractions likely to be of interest to trekkers beyond Simikot lie in the rugged scenery and the scattered traditional villages. Also in the area is a significant mountain range, Saipal Himal. A side trip to the Saipal glacier is an attractive option. The trekking trail mostly follows the valley of the Humla Karnali River , the main tributary of the Karnali River , which has its source inside Tibet .
The major difficulty when trekking this routes is concerned with access. The only practical way to get to Simikot is to fly there from Nepalgunj or to trek from Rara Lake . The latter takes seven days and involves trekking through mostly undeveloped country. Flights into and out of Simikot are generally unreliable but large groups have the option of chartering flights to gain access. Additionally, the border at Hilsa is frequently closed without notice by the Chinese authorities. |
