You can make an outstanding trek in eastern Nepal from either Hile or Tumlingtar by walking north up the Arun River to Sedua and Num, then crossing Shipton La (4127m) into the upper Barun Khola Valley for a close look at Makalu (8475m) and Chamlang (7290m). The trek to Makalu base camp visits one of the most remote and unfrequented areas of Nepal . The Barun Valley is part of a huge international protected area under a agreement between Nepal and China . The Makalu Barun National Park was established in 1992 as Nepal 's eighth national park. The 2330 sq Km park is bordered by the Arun River in the east and the Sagarmatha National Park on the west. To the south the park is bordered by 830-sq. km conservation.

Special Rules

The Makalu Barun National Park is subject to all the rules relating the national park, including 0 entrance fee, fee for video cameras and restriction on firewood use. In 1993 there is official entrance station, so you have to fees were collected. This will probably have changed by the time you trek here. The present park office is in Khandbari, but it is likely that an entrance station will be established in LK Sedua.
