In this classic remote adventure, the Manasalu circuit trek takes you from the lower valley to the majestic upper valley...
This trek has obvious appeal, with it’s route taking trekkers to the base camp of the world’s tallest mountain. With it’s outstanding views of the mighty Mount Everest 8848m and the similarly impressive peaks nearby of Pumari 7165m, Nuptse 7861m and the Khumbu Glacier, this is undoubtedly one of the most popular treks in the world. As well as visiting base camp at 5363m, this trek offers the opportunity to hike to the top of nearby Kalapathar 5555m, from where there are unrivalled 360 views of the Mount Everest region and the surrounding Himalayas.
Everest base camp trek begins at Lukla, following the Everest expedition trail. After 2 days on the route we stay at the Sherpa settlement of Namche Bazzar 3440m, where we take a day’s rest for acclimatization and a chance of the first excellent view of Mt Everest. Continuing on, we visit the famous Buddhist monastery at Tyangbuche with the beautiful backdrop view of Mt Amadablang. The route then gently ascends through the Imja valley with comfortable stays in friendly Sherpa owned tea houses, before finally ascending towards Gorak Shep and base camp itself.
The majority of the route falls within the Sagarmatha National Park, ‘Sagarmatha’ being the Nepali name for Mount Everest. There is the opportunity for keen eyed trekkers to spot the region’s rare wildlife, including Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep, Himalayan Thar and the charismatic Snow Leopard. The combination of beautiful surroundings and the rich cultural experience of the local Sherpa hospitality make this a matchless choice for the adventurous trekker.
A good level of fitness and some trekking experience is highly recommended for this trek with some parts of the trail providing challenging hiking, especially when at the higher altitudes. There is no doubt however that 2 weeks on this trek will provide a genuine sense of achievement with lasting memories of the stunning surroundings.
As with all our treks, we can be flexible with the itinerary and can adjust many details according to your time, availability and special interests.
