With nicknames such as “the roof of the world,” “the Third Pole” and the “Asian water tower,” the Tibetan Plateau, an average elevation of 4900 meters (16000ft). Lhasa is the modern capital city and major trading center. The whole Tibet encompasses an area greater than Western Europe, is a place of great geological and cultural importance. The plateau is surrounded by the highest peaks in the Himalayas available oxygen in most of it is only half of that at sea level. It provides water for more than half of Asia and lies in the first highest plateau on earth, scientists are concerned about the effects climate change might have on the glaciers that cover the plateau
