Gokyo Valley & Chola Pass Trek

This route takes trekkers over one of the highest passes available to visitors to the Mount Everest area. The trail winds its way up through the Sagarmatha national Park, heartland of the world-famous Sherpa people and their traditional Buddhist culture. Rare wild life in the region is a draw for many, including the chance to spot Himalayan Thar, Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep, the endangered Snow Leopard and just maybe, the elusive and fabled ‘Yeti’! The ever changing landscapes of the Khumbu valley are spectacular and make this trip a unique and hugely rewarding adventure experience.

Chola Pass trek fers the perfect opportunity to observe many mountains which stand above 8000 meters, such as Mount Everest, Choyu, Nuptse, Lothse, and Manasalu. Further afield, smaller peaks of 6000 meters and above complete breathtaking vistas of these, the world’s tallest, most charismatic mountains.

The trek starts from Lukla, gateway of many Mount Everest expeditions, after a 30 minute scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu. The route then continues alongside the Dudhkoshi River passing lush fertile Himalayan land, suspension bridges, pine forest and the colourful Sherpa settlement, Namche bazaar. Here we take a day’s rest for acclimatization before continuing along the trail, staying at well furnished mountain trekking guest houses, observing the holy blue lake at Gokyo and taking a day trip ascent of Gokyo Ri (5363m). Further on, the trail passes the Nyajuma Glacier before crossing the high pass at Chola (5340m) to connect to the more popular Everest base camp route.

This trek is of a moderate to difficult grade and those wishing to undertake it should have a good fitness level and certainly some trekking experience. It also provides excellent pre- exercise and acclimatization for peak climbing.

As with all our treks, we can be flexible with the itinerary and can adjust many details according to your time, availability and special interests.
